Introducing Gambia’s own Princess Shyngle: Big Nollywood’ Star Right Now In Ghana
For this upcoming Gambian international actress, acting is not just a mere career. Completely passionate about what she is doing, 20-year-old Princess Shyngle said that acting requires intelligence, commitment, determination and team work.
Although young, Princess is already making headlines in both Nigeria and Ghana. She’s one of the few Gambian girls with a promising future in Nollywood. Enjoy our exclusive interview with her:
What’s On: Tell us about yourself.
Princess: My name is Princess Shyngle. I was born on the 25th December, 1990. Daughter of Mr. WInston Shyngle current Deputy Mayor of Banjul and Ramatoulie Cham a business woman. I was born in Banjul but brought up in Kanifing.
I did my day care, nursery, primary, junior secondary and high school at Ndow’s Comprehensive, so I will say I am a product of Mrs. Ndow (laughs).
After I graduated from high school I did an IT course at Jollof Tutors, then I started my own event company, Princess Promotions. It was a nonprofit making venture that was behind different types of events like inter-school beauty pageants, concerts and parties and the money generated was given back to the society in the form of donations to needy hospitals, schools, students etc.
With the success of my events, I got spotted by Coca Cola Gambia Ltd (Gambega) and was offered a job as a marketing and events supervisor. The offer was too good to let go so I took it and started working for them.
How did you get interested in act?
I was actually at work one day and I received a call from a friend telling me that some Nollywood producers are in town and they are doing a nationwide audition in search of a talented Gambian actor to represent The Gambia in an international reality show called The Next Movie Star Africa. She asked me to go and give it a try. My reaction at first was like - I've never acted before, I know nothing about acting. She insisted and I decided to give it a shot.
I went for the auditions the next day and I was very nervous I must say. I was given a script and asked to act like a pregnant woman in labour. After the audition, they gave positive remarks and said they will get back to me. A few days later, I received a call from them and was told that I was selected to represent The Gambia in Nigeria together with 16 other contestants from other African countries. I was very excited and nervous at the same time, because it was a really huge challenge, but I was up for it.
I was the youngest and the least experience actress in the whole competition. All the other contestants have done movies before but I didn't let that get to me. I wanted to represent Gambia to the fullest and with the help of God and my determination I made it to the final six and then came 3rd in the whole of Africa, it was unbelievable.
What was your first break in the industry as a newcomer?
Going to the Next Movie Star Africa competition and emerging the 2nd runner up was my first big break in the movie industry. I had instant publicity, exposure and fame in Nollywood. It was the public that were voting for me, because they thought I was talented, real, entertaining, intelligent and very fluent in English.
Did you encounter any problem during the process?
Being a young actress in a foreign country is very challenging, but life itself is challenging. As long as you believe in God, believe in yourself, determined and humble then nothing can ever bring you down, that's what's helping me
What movie projects are you working on right now?
I have worked on a lot of projects since I did Next Movie Star in 2011. I did a series for the organizers where I played a lead, titled Dormitory 8 and it was aired on DStv African Magic for a whole year. Then I moved to Ghana and signed a contract with one of the biggest TV stations to play a lead in another series The 5 Brides, which is currently airing on DStv African Magic Chanel 151 every Tuesday, starting 8:30PM.
I did a movie where I actually wrote the story and script titled The Hidden Fantasy, featuring stars like John Dumelo, Juliet Ibrahim, Martha Ankoma and others, and I recently co-produced my first movie with Ghana's leading producer Abdou Salam Mumuni, titled The Will and directed by award winning director Frank Rajah - featuring Yvonne Nelson, John Dumelo, Kofi Ajorlolo, Nikki Samonas and others.
I have lots of project!
Since you are part of Nollywood now, what is your opinion about some of the shocking sex scenes from Nollywood movies?
Well personally I don't see anything wrong with sex scenes, because it’s just a movie and it’s not real. Doing a sex scene in a movie does not mean you actually having sex. The job of a great actress is to interpret the character and make it look real, so the audience will believe and enjoy the movie. So I don't see anything wrong with sex scenes.

How to create your own Wedding RSVP HOTLINE using Google Voice
To keep the cost of our paper suite down, I was decidedly against having RSVP cards returned by mail. We live in an age where a lot of people handle their business online or by phone, and from there everything is recorded electronically. Not only did I not want the extra costs, I didn’t want the extra hassle. For starters, our wedding website offers a customizable RSVP form. We’re able to ask very specific questions, make required fields, and generate a spreadsheet of all RSVPs received. Why consider anything else? The website couldn’t be more perfect. BUT—and there always seems to be a “but” when it comes to wedding planning—by nixing mail returned RSVPs I was left with one conundrum: How do we ensure that everyone is able to RSVP?—even our not-so tech savvy guests?
The phone, of course! The only option in my mind was an awesome RSVP service that featured a live agent who would record all of the information. Unfortunately, the company stopped offering it just in time for my wedding, and paying money to have our guests call an answering machine was out of the question—especially with rates starting at $130. Thanks, but no thanks! Nonetheless, what I thought to be a huge setback turned out to be a huge cost-saving hurdle in the form of Google Voice.
In various searches for “RSVP (this and that)” there was always at least one bride amongst the threads I’d been reading that mentioned Google Voice. Reluctantly, I pursued it because it seemed to be my only option. I wasn’t happy. However, once it was done and I realized how easy it was, I felt ashamed of the attitude I had going in. In a few short steps, we got a personalized RSVP hotline that people can’t even pay money for.
What makes Google Voice so great? Of course, the top reason on my list is the cost—absolutely NOTHING. Other features include one number to ring all of the phones of your choosing, an online voicemail with transcriptions sent to you by email or text, call blocking and custom greetings.
It should go without saying that in order to use Google Voice you must have a Google/Gmail account and an active phone line to receive calls on. The phone line can be a mobile or landline phone. On behalf of Google, I apologize to all of the international budget savvy brides who may be interested in Google Voice. Unfortunately, this service is limited to the US and you must have an existing US number to get a Google Voice number.
Understanding instructions for Google Voice can be a little confusing, particularly at the point after you’ve gotten the phone number and need to figure out how to set-up your greeting. With that said, here’s a comprehensive breakdown of how to set up your own Google Voice RSVP line:
Step 1 – Set up your phone number
- Go to www.google.com/voice. Read and accept Google Voice’s terms and privacy policies.
- When prompted to choose a new number or use your existing number, select “I want a new number.”
- Before selecting a Google Voice number, you must decide which of your existing phone numbers you’d like to have calls routed to. Enter that number and continue.
- Google will need to verify the number you entered is your own so have your phone handy. You will be prompted to click “call me now” and enter the 2-digit verification code on your screen. Go ahead and do that.
- Now, you’re ready to pick a number. The next screen will ask if there is an area, zip code, city and/or a word, phrase, or number that you’d like to use in the available numbers you’ll pick from. Go with what works best for you. Pick your number; write it down; and select “Finish.” Step 1 is complete.
Step 2 – Choose your settings
I mentioned that the next steps after setting up a Google Voice number can be a little confusing. At least it was for me. And if you find yourself feeling that way I’ll walk you through it quickly in the video tutorial that you can watch here. (For some reason we are having trouble embedding the video in the blog post– sorry about that!)Step 3 – Record your personalized greeting
It’s show time! Before you press record, make sure to have your script ready. Script?—yes, script. How else will you be prepared to let your guests know what information to leave? It doesn’t have to be difficult. Tony and I prepped a short script and it went something like this:Tony: Thanks for calling, you’ve reached the RSVP line for the future Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hall Jr.
Naja: We hope to see you at our wedding on August 20, 2016!
Tony: After the tone, please say the first and last names of the guests you are RSVPing for.
Cute, huh?
Once your script is ready, click “Record New Greeting” and follow the prompts. You will receive a call from Google Voice, upon which you will record your message. It may take a few tries to get it just right; just make sure you have fun with it. And guess what…? You’re do!

Partnering to advance safe motherhood in Sierra Leone: Miss Sierra Leone USA Women’s Leadership and Scholarship Pageant 2012
The Miss Sierra Leone USA Women’s Leadership and Scholarship Pageant 2012 (a production of the nonprofit MSLDC Inc.) is honored to announce that Victoria Secrets Supermodel, Selita Ebanks, is the Pageant’s Grand Chief Patron on July 1, 2012 at the Montgomery College Performing Arts Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. As a committed champion of safe motherhood and dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable girls and women worldwide, Selita is no stranger to global health causes. Selita is currently the Goodwill Ambassador for the maternal health program of Wellbody Alliance, which is also supported by the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Madam Sia Nyama Koroma.
One of MSLDC’s main goals is to raise awareness and strengthen capacity for the improvement of maternal child health in Sierra Leone. As such, we are delighted to partner this year with several organizations and initiatives in a three-day awareness and fundraising campaign from June 29 to July 1 to mark current advances in maternal child health in Sierra Leone and maximize investments to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in this area,” said Fuambai Ahmadu, Ph.D, a medical anthropologist specializing in maternal health and child development in Sierra Leone and founder of MSLDC Inc.
Since 2006, the MSLUSA Pageant has provided thousands of dollars in cash scholarships to winners as well as opportunities for contestants to develop critical self-esteem, confidence, public speaking, community service, and leadership skills. Previous winners and contestants have gone on to found their own nonprofits and charitable organizations (such as Sisters Supporting Sisters www.misssierraleone.com; Children’s Empowerment Foundation www.childrenef.org; and Yehri Wi Cry www.yehriwicry.org), assisting in poverty alleviation as well as the development of initiatives in health and education in Sierra Leone, especially with respect to the girl-child.Miss Sierra Leone USA Ruby B Johnson departs for Freetown to participate in Sierra Leone‘s 52nd independence anniversary
