Miss Africa USA 2010: Contestant Mariatu Ashake Cole from Sierra Leone

UGPulse: The current Miss Africa USA, 2008 Miss South Africa Nyasha Zimucha, has elevated the pageant to a whole new level. The game has changed in a big way. What would you bring to the pageant at the get-go, if you were to win Miss Africa USA 2010?
I strongly believe that it is time that we take ownership of the health of our African continent. To accomplish this task, it is extremely important that we focus on the deep rooted issues that have kept the public health system stagnant at such an abysmal level in so many African countries. A few of these issues are low numbers of local doctors and nurses, the lack of electricity or the insufficient supply of water to run a hospital, unsanitary conditions and the dire need for community-based health education. It is these types of problems that my platform, Raising the Bar: Improving Africa's Public Health Standards through Service & Education, will directly address

What moved me the most about the movie was the fact that it is almost impossible to have a clear understanding about the cultures, beliefs and existence of a society that is different from our own. After becoming one of the Na'vis, Jake Sully demonstrates that subjective realism is very vital in interspecies reasoning. By placing himself in the core existence of another species, he realized the essence of their culture and beliefs and went as far as falling in love with one of them. This illustrates the importance of subjectivity in the understanding of a community which we are not a part of.
The positive message from the movie is the love for one's culture, the love for one's community, the dedication in protecting one's environment, and the collective struggle to fight forces attempting to destroy the core of one's existence. Despite the fear of being deceived by the humans, the Na'vis still united as one strong and dedicated army to defeat the US military forces in order to protect their existence. As a member of the African community, this reminds me of the dedication and patriotism that we need in order to protect our culture and tradition, to put an end to corruption and to help make Africa a much better place for the existence of future generations
